First, what’s the difference between CBD and THC?
It is important to understand the basic fundamentals of CBD and THC before delving into the neuroprotective effects of CBD. First we must understand that CBD is cannabidiol and THC is tetrahydrocannabinol, both derived from the same plant, the cannabis plant. However, CBD and THC are each unique in their own ways. THC might be the more recognized of the two, as it is best known for its euphoric effect, but it is also effective in relieving nausea, improving appetite, and helping resolve insomnia.
One of the main differences between THC and CBD is that THC is a psychoactive compound that provides an instant effect that you can feel, while CBD does not intoxicate you. Would taking too much THC cause memory problems?
THC has a very similar chemical structure to anandamide, which is one of the two major cannabinoids produced by the body. Anandamide plays an important role in the formation and processing of memories; anandamide deficits are associated with a quicker onset of PTSD in patients who have had a traumatic experience. THC alleviates the symptoms of PTSD by making the memory more selective - unless THC is taken at a dose too high. At too high of a dose, THC the brain becomes more selective than it should, taking too much anandamide, which instead may cause the short term memory problems. However, this stops once your body gets flushed from THC. All this goes to say, the dose matters.
Can CBD help balance the effects of THC?
While it is true that some studies have shown that the THC compound from cannabis can occasionally induce anxiety and psychotic symptoms, it is more interesting to note that CBD can significantly reduce the negative effects of THC, as an antagonistic effect. Additionally, CBD is also found to be neuroprotective.

How much CBD should I take?
As a general rule of thumb, it may be best to approach CBD dosage with the saying, “Start low and slow”. This means that you should start with small doses and pay close attention to how your body is responding before slowly increasing your dosage. Every person may be slightly different in how they respond to CBD, so it’s important to monitor the effect of how CBD makes you feel.
